D: What is checking understanding?

[Glue in handout here]

  • Checking understanding means I know when I'm reading with my eyes and brain, not just with my eyes.

P: How do I check my understanding?

  • While reading I notice:
    • frustration
    • tired
    • slow
    • many unknown words
    • not visualizing
  • After reading:
    • cannot retell what I read

C: When/Why do I check my understanding?

  • I check my understanding during and after reading.
  • Checking understanding helps me make meaning.
