How to Read a Dictionary Entry


D: What is a dictionary entry?

  • A dictionary entry is a group of text including the pronunciation, part of speech, definition(s), and example of how to use a particular word.

P: How do I use a dictionary entry?

  1. Look at the part of speech. Does it match the way the word is used in context?
  2. Read each of the definitions and choose the one most closely connected to what I'm reading or studying.
    • Don't ignore the examples! They help!
Tips & Tricks:
  • If you can't find a word, remove a prefix or suffix.

Examples:

Preschoolers: Pre-   school    -er   -s
Antispam: anti- spam
Remodeled: re- model -ed
Programming: program -ing
